Indulge me a little peeps.

Today I want to tell you about a group of fellas who sprinkle a little magic into my life week in, week out.

One is a cheeky Dr Who aficionado with some serious gravitas and a voice of golden tonsils. One a Star Wars geek with the biggest of hearts, a quick wit and a tech brilliance I’m a little green eyed about. Another a gorgeously sensitive soul with a penchant for true crime docos and a wonderful ability to put stories to paper.

We found each other rather randomly through another media podcast I have occasionally filled in on –  TV BlackBox. The brilliant TV executive Robert Mcknight (who I am  forever indebted to for many great things in my life) has a knack for pulling the right team of people together. In TV speak it’s called “chemistry” but in real life it’s rather elusive.

We’re a bit of an odd-bod bunch of pyjama-clad TV  Binge-watching junkies.

Two I met via Zoom just before Covid hit and one is a former colleague I’d always adored. It seemed like a motley crew, but from the first time we zoomed-in together we just knew there was something a little magical. Some things in life are like that, aren’t they?

We meet remotely from our lounge-room couches every week armed with a microphone, some headphones, a glass of Champagne (for me anyway!) and plenty of excitement about our favourite TV shows and what we’re loving and loathing (we call them Claps or Slaps).

And these boys have been my lifesavers. Truly. That may sound a little dramatic, yes. But in this bunch of fellow, random, TV lovers I have found my peeps. And while there hasn’t been a lot to look forward to this year, while my job prospects are unstable and uncertain, while – as you all know – this strange year continues to throw curve balls at us; I just wanted to say that in this group of mismatched peeps I have found a wonderful tribe.

They give me something to look forward to every week. They give me a schedule. A shared goal. A purpose. They have lifted me up when I have felt aimless and rather useless. They remind me who I am and what I am capable of. They remind me I have a voice, a voice worth listening to. They make me feel like me, a little bit of the old me before a pandemic hit and took away most of my work and my self esteem with it. And they tolerate and celebrate my quirks and indulge my Real Housewives obsessions and more. I mean they’re better than a husband!

And even though we’ve only met face-to-face once (and yes there was much popcorn throwing!) I’m pretty confident I’ve found a tribe for life. And the best bit? We are now a growing FB community of like minded souls which warms my heart. It’s a group of thousands. You can even join them here if you want to know what to watch on the box: http://https://www.facebook.com/groups/TVBingeboxGang/

I’m sharing this now because more than ever we need to celebrate the people in our life who bring us joy. So Steve Molk, Dan Bennett and Stephen Brookes; five stars for you!

Ps. You can catch our latest episode talking all things Women Who Kill which you can watch on SBS On Demand. For any Desperate Housewives lovers it’s a MUSThttps://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/tv-bingebox/id1502393371
