Netball is something I’ve only experienced as a parent on the sideline. Not being much of a sporty spice growing up – well let’s be honest I think I have only owned one pair of sneakers in my adult life, that’s how infrequently they are used! But I’ve learned the meaning of the word team spirit through my youngest daughter, Allegra.
I’ve seen how netball empowers our young girls. I’ve seen how being brave, fierce and strong goes hand in hand with kindness and friendship off the court. I’ve seen how the idea you are part of something bigger than yourself creates a sense of belonging and a bond like no other. And I’ve seen how bringing your A-Game week in week out is the only way to succeed.
Strong is the new pretty and I’m happy to watch with admiration as a spectator as the next generation look to the women who have gone before them and hopefully create a little bit of that magic history too!
I was lucky enough to host the 50th Anniversary Celebrations for Randwick Netball Association at Souths Juniors, where plenty of Diamonds past, present and future gathered to celebrate women in sport. Attendees included Australian netball pioneer Marcia Ella-Duncan OAM, Channel 9’s head of netball and former Diamond Keeley Devery OAM and current Diamonds player Gabi Simpson. Well done Randwick Netball Association. 50 suits you!!
Here’s a link to a story I wrote for The Daily Telegraph about the celebrations.
